Scope note
Tropical shrub or small tree of the loosestrife family, native to northern Africa, Asia, and Australia. The plant bears small opposite leaves and fragrant, white to red flowers. It is the source of dye used for temporary tattooing and to dye skin, hair and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather.
